Polka DVD

Polka was declared the Wisconsin State Dance in 1994, but which polka was it? Wisconsin has more varieties than anywhere in the world. In “Polka from Cuca” we see some of the state’s best polka musicians—from the Old World German sounds of Syl Groeschl and Swiss yodeling of Martha Bernet and Betty Vetterli to the raucous, intricate Slovenian music of Verne and Steve Meisner.

From the Norwegian clowning and amazing musicianship of the Goose Island Ramblers to the high energy Polish sound of Alvin Styczynski, “Polka from Cuca” is informative, entertaining proof that polka culture thrives in Wisconsin as nowhere else! Recorded live-in-person at the Riverview Ballroom in Sauk City, some of Wisconsin’s finest dancers are in evidence.

This town was also the home of legendary Cuca Records, which boasts the world’s largest catalog of polka and old time music. Short interviews with the performers and commentary by folklorist Dr. James Leary of the University of Wisconsin Folklore Program bring each tradition to life.

This video contains three songs from each artist plus excerpts from others. There are 45 additional minutes of concert footage on this Deluxe Edition DVD, with 14 more songs by Groeschl, the Meisners, Styczynski, and the Ramblers.
