2005 GRAMMY® WINNER (Tejano CD Album)
For the first time, three acclaimed Texas accordionists come together to pay tribute to accordion greats who preceded them and inspired them to pursue their musical calling. Recorded in a rapid-fire, three-day session in July 2004, this 10-cut compilation contains six classic instrumental melodies (including two medleys) and four 'canciones rancheras' constructed by legendary names like Narciso Martinez, Pedro Ayala, Paulino Bernal, Tony de la Rosa, and Esteban Jordan, among others. A heart-and-soul effort; rare sessions that capture three spectacular Tex-Mex talents in one moment in time for Polka posterity.
Tejano superstar David Lee Garza, who has achieved fame both as a solo performer and as a leader of the group Los Musicales, offers up another fine south-of-the-border outing with 2004's POLKAS, GRITOS Y ACORDEONES. In an age when the Latin charts are packed with synthesizer-heavy pop and adult-contemporary balladry, it is something of a relief to run across a record as rootsy, traditional, and fun as this one. The instrumentation is classic Tejano, with bass, drums, guitar, accordion, and plenty of lovely harmonizing on a range of up-tempo, immediately appealing tunes.
For good measure, Garza is joined by two friends here--Joel Guzman and Sunny Sauceda. The trio kicks up quite a good time on "Loretta Polka" and the bouncing "Capirotada Medley." "El Circo" (AKA "Alabama Jubilee") shows off the accordion chops of both Garza and Guzman, while the sentimental "Por El Amor A Mi Madre" makes the perfect barroom sing-along. POLKAS, GRITOS Y ACORDEONES is a dose of classic Tejano that pushes all the right buttons.
